2019 marks the 400 year anniversary of events that have shaped both Virginian and American history. Within Virginia, we find events that have contributed to democracy, cultural identity, diversity, historical traditions, and entrepreneurial spirit.
The AMERICAN EVOLUTION™ commemorates Virginia’s historical occasions that continue to impact America today through the themes of democracy, diversity, and opportunity.
Join The Z and company for StoryHour at The Z; experience Moth Radio Hour style stories, spoken words, and timeless tales to celebrate the diversity that defines the American spirit from 1619-2019.
The Z’s Community Liaison, Sibel Galindez, heard about the AMERICAN EVOLUTION™ Commemoration and reached out to storytellers in the community to create this Moth Radio Hour style event. Co-conceived by Sheila Arnold and Mrs. Galindez, StoryHour at The Z will showcase a diverse and talented group of storytellers and spoken word artists who have created works relating to the themes of the commemoration: Diversity, Democracy, and Opportunity.
The themes of diversity, democracy, and opportunity can have myriad meanings and connotations to different individuals. When Mrs. Galindez approached me about writing this article, she asked what these themes mean to me. My answer? America was founded on these themes, these principles, yet people often forget this. Today, more than ever, there seems to be a call to return to such basic principles. In my own generation especially, we have been advocating for a stronger sense of democracy, diversity, and opportunity, allowing everyone a chance to have their voice heard.
I posed the question, “What does diversity, democracy, and opportunity mean to you?” to my peers. Some of their responses:
“Equal opportunity and representation for everyone, regardless of race or gender.”
-Levi V, 16
“A platform where everyone has the chance to succeed.”
-Nate S, 17
“Being able to pursue anything you put your mind to.”
-Sydney S, 16
“Democracy is not a right, but a duty. It’s a duty to choose who you feel will lead the nation on a proper path, not choosing those who wear your preferred color.”
-Brandon F, 17
“Diversity means no group should be underrepresented in political or social situations and each should have a say in discussions.”
-Nate S, 14
“It means we have a better choice to create a greater future for ourselves.”
-Samuel P, 18
