We asked some of our contributors: What person, place, or thing in Hampton Roads are you grateful for?
Here are their answers. Links are to their author pages.
I’m grateful for Stella’s! I studied for my LSATs there, my exams throughout law school, and now the bar. Studying would probably be more productive, but a lot less fun without them. – Erin Cook
I’m grateful for my co-organizers and the members of Code for Hampton Roads. They volunteer their time on a weekly basis to improve the way technology is used to deliver government and community services in our region. Examples of their work can be found here. – Kevin Curry
My wife who is due at the end of the year! – David Paul Kleinman
I’m ultra thankful for Michelle Odom and Handmade Hampton Roads. We have a wonderful community here that really helps, teaches and informs. – Tiara Diamond
I’m grateful that of all the places that exist in the world, a solid bunch of really intelligent, creative, and passionate people picked here/Norfolk/Ghent to live/settle/start rad businesses. – Liz Hull
I’m thankful for Cafe Stella and how Mariusz & Stella make me feel like family. I’m thankful for the Chrysler Museum & Glass Studio that are full of talented and inspiring coworkers. I’m thankful for AltDaily taking a chance on my voice and passion for the arts. And finally, thankful to Ghent in general for becoming my new home. – Paige Marlene Koch
It may be generic, but I am grateful for extended ‘friend’ family members. When we moved here years ago, it seemed very lonely. I now have friends that are as close, if not closer, as family. I am thankful for their friendship, love, and support. They have helped make HR home. – Stephanie Harris
Bev Sell and Five Points Community Farm Market; Bakehouse (can’t live without that bread and those scones now); and generally just the awesome community we have in Norfolk, where pop up restaurants, great art shows, unique new businesses, and a supportive and creative environment are all now the norm. Also, Ten Top‘s soups for getting me through the holiday season. (Really grateful they’re right across from us at Kitsch.) – Vicky Bahr
I’m grateful for friends with warm, generous spirits and the many ways that they shape the landscape of our lives. Yesterday, a friend gave me a card that said “It’s not what we have in our life, but who we have in our life that counts” -J.M Laurence. This is an ultimate truth in my book. I am also very grateful for Hollywood (of Fair Grounds fame) for teaching me the true meaning of soul family.– Skye Zentz
I’m grateful that AltDaily has given me the opportunity to see burly men with chainsaws, Elsa on ice, Spiderman flying from the top of Scope, a million bulbs, and the soon-to-be best public library in the state of Virginia. I’m also grateful that AltDaily has given me the chance to write about all these things and more. Happy Thanksgiving to my extended family. – Penny Neef
Other than Amazon suggesting me crafty ways to hide my booze from my very religious family? I’m so thankful for the people I work with and the support they give, my best friend and mentor, and my husband for putting up with the Navy and all of its demands. Couldn’t have done it without them. – Brittany Slay
With all the injustice done to kids I see in the world and right here, I’m not sure I have the words to express accurately how grateful I am for my two beautiful, healthy and intelligent kids who feel safe, secure, and loved. – Holly Carson Christopher
I’m grateful for AltDaily and the opportunities it provides community members to be heard! – Derek Allen Page
I’m grateful to work for a company that believes in the importance of journalism. I’m grateful for the opportunity to put my energy toward a movement that I believe is making my adopted hometown a more inspired place to live. I’m grateful for every AltDaily contributor, the people who live their passion. I’m grateful for second chances. I’m grateful for the option of evolving. I’m grateful to everyone willing to make sacrifices to a cause bigger than themselves. I’m grateful for all of you who read AltDaily. – Jesse Scaccia
