Norfolk Academy and Virginia Arts Festival have a “longstanding and important partnership”. On Tuesday, April 30, they will present Cantus, a men’s a capella ensemble, at Norfolk Academy.
Cantus, based in Minneapolis-St.Paul, is one of this country’s few full-time a capella vocal groups. They perform over 60 concerts each year, both nationally and internationally. They have performed at Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center and Vail Valley Music Festival.
Norfolk Academy has worked with the Virginia Arts Festival for the past 17 – 18 years to bring outstanding performers to the campus. “The partnership is rooted in the principles of our school’s Philosophy and Objectives,” said Headmaster Dennis G. Manning. “We think that the formation of a child involves helping them develop an aesthetic appreciation. It is consistent with our belief in attuning them to the beautiful in the world and surrounding them with beauty as they learn and grow.”
Cantus will perform for Norfolk Academy’s grades 7 – 12 the afternoon of the 7:30 pm public performance. “While our school is a private school, we are dedicated to serving a public role and strengthening the Hampton Roads community in many ways, including sharing our facilities with groups like the Special Olympics and Bay Youth Orchestras of Virginia, just to name two of the many partnership we enjoy.”
Cantus performs a wide variety of music from the Renaissance to the 21st century. Working without a conductor, each performer is part of the collaborative process in their music making.
The program is titled “Alone Together”.
It includes original works written for Cantus by Steven Sametz, David Lang, and Libby Larsen, the director of VAF’s John Duffy Institute of New Opera. You will also hear music by Jennifer Higdon, Laura Mvula, McCartney and Lennon, Beethoven, Dave Matthews and Arcade Fire.
“Alone Together” explores “the ways people have found to be connected to each other and create communities” in our high tech society. Cantus, Virginia Arts Festival and Norfolk Academy all firmly believe that singing creates community.
