(Virginia Beach, VA) August 1, 2018 — The ViBe Creative District announced today that the public is invited to the unveiling of the first 3D, life-sized LOVE sign in the city of Virginia Beach on Saturday, August 11th at 11:30 A.M. on the corner of Cypress Avenue and 18th Street, outside the Oceanfront Library. Councilmen John Uhrin will offer remarks in support of Virginia Beach’s first arts district. Additionally, the Oceanfront Library is planning complimentary art activities inside the library for the public.
“We are excited to add an artist designed 3-dimensional sculptural artwork to the ViBe Creative District and think this Oceanfront Library location is perfect for its proximity to ViBe Park,” said Kate Pittman, executive director.
The LOVEworks program is a state-wide branding initiative designed to promote historic life experiences in Virginia and strengthen awareness of the “Virginia is for Lovers” message. The LOVE sign will be added to a collection of more than 100 large scale LOVEworks that are installed throughout the Commonwealth. These LOVEworks spark community pride, attract tourists, and spread the message that “Virginia is for Lovers.”
The goals for adding the LOVEwork in the ViBe Creative District are the following:
· Be free and open to the public at all times
· Located in clear view of pedestrian and vehicular traffic
· Accessible to people who want to stand near / behind sign and take pictures
· Contribute to the district as sculptural public artwork
· Be on display for a minimum of two years
· Be added to the Virginia Is for Lovers’ Sign map for VA and apart of statewide tourism efforts
After issuing a public call for artist designs via social media in Spring 2018, ViBe selected Virginia Beach resident and graphic designer Chesley De Leon. De Leon’s vision will be fabricated by local sign experts Signs of Success. The sign was sponsored by grants from the Virginia Tourism Corporation and the Virginia Beach Office of Cultural Affairs. The City of Virginia Beach authorized this installation on public property at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront Library, on the corner of 18th Street and Cypress Avenue.
Love is about gathering the community together so there will also be events occurring before and after the public unveiling in the ViBe Creative District. Before the unveiling, support local vendors at the Old Beach Farmers Market, Old Beach Art Market, and Old Beach Green Market, which will be setup along Cypress Avenue between 18th and 19th Street from 9 A.M. to 12 P.M. After the unveiling, the public can enjoy live funk music and grab a local craft beer at the Commonwealth ViBez Summer Beer Garden in the ViBe Park on the corner of 18th Street and Cypress Avenue from 12 P.M. to 10 P.M. Hands on activities will also take place inside the library that day.

About the LOVEwork:
De Leon says, “I wanted to reflect the area and the community of Virginia Beach in a simple but eye-catching way. The L has the ViBe logo and a paintbrush to represent the growing and vibrant Creative District, which is also the home base for the LOVEwork. The O depicts the city’s most popular attraction and my favorite place to be, the beach. The V is a rainbow-colored peace sign that represents the city’s diverse, friendly, and easygoing atmosphere. The E has the Town Center logo, which depicts The Westin and the Armada Hoffler Tower, to represent the urban life. Virginia Beach is constantly taking steps to move forward and grow in population and popularity. This city has so much to offer so I am ecstatic that there is now a LOVEwork to solidify the fact that Virginia Beach and the rest of Virginia is indeed for lovers.”

About the Artist:
CHESLEY DE LEON
Local artist, Chesley De Leon, was born and raised in Virginia Beach. De Leon’s artistic background is a little different from other artists. She explains, “Throughout my life, I thought creating things was just a hobby of mine. However, while I was obtaining my B.A. in Historic Preservation, I learned how to use numerous computer programs, took art classes and used those resources to produce a medley of creative things. I started playing around with the programs and taught myself how to create graphics on it. Something that I thought I dabbled in, turned into my passion. The creative process – whether it is designing graphics, sculpting, drafting in AutoCAD, or modeling in SketchUp – gives me the energy to work on it all day and all night. It’s an exhilarating feeling.” De Leon is an aspiring Urban Designer and her goal is to combine her various interests in order to help an area’s economy and community through the arts, preservation, and revitalization.
