It is beyond sad to have to post this, but in light of the recent anti-LGBT terrorist attack in Orlando, a little re-assurance surrounding this weekend’s PRIDE event might be needed.
From Michael Berlucchi, president of Hampton Roads Pride:
We always planned for a robust security posture because we know that our celebrations inspire very positive and negative responses from the community.
In light of the tragic events in Orlando, we will experience an enhanced and visible law enforcement presence in and around our events. There is a coordinated local, state, and federal effort in place to make every effort to ensure the safety at the Pride Block Party and PrideFest.
I hope our community will strengthen its resolve in the face of terror and hatred and unite in love this week at our Pride celebrations.
The theme of this year’s festival is perfect: Love Unites. You can learn more about Pride Week and the big Pride event here.
I would like to take a moment to send giant appreciation and love to Pride, the folks at WHRO, Robert Roman and Claus Ihlemann from Decorum Furniture, and everyone else involved with putting on last night’s vigil. Those that were murdered in Orlando will not die in vain. This was a hate crime. Justice, liberty and compassion will prevail with evolved gun safety laws. The change is coming, and we’re all a part of it.
Love unites, indeed.
