It’s hard to remember that, just a few short years ago, the southside was a veritable wasteland for craft brewing.
Today we have a thriving community of local craft breweries churning out some remarkable beers, are anticipating the very real arrival of a spectacular west coast brewery (Green Flash) in Virginia Beach, and are a finalist for Stone’s east coast operation. What a difference a few years can make.
Now there is more exciting news coming from one of our local breweries. Smartmouth will be adding three 60 barrel fermenters, increasing their capacity by a whopping 75% in order to meet demand. This, combined with the recent addition of the canning line, will take the little brewery in Chelsea to a new level.
I am always glad to see good breweries expand, but I am especially excited about Smartmouth doing so. This will no doubt allow them to not only increase their output of their stable of go-to brews (more Rule G, please), but will also offer them more opportunity for special edition beers, which is something that they have excelled at since the very beginning. With very few exceptions, I have almost always felt that the limited editions should have been added as yearly offerings and hopefully the increased capacity will allow us Smartmouth fans to get more of what we love.
The brewery has also just announced the pending arrival of one of these new brews to coincide with IPA Day, August 1st; the beer has been coined “Missing Digit” and is a Hemp IPA (interesting side note, hemp and hops are in the same family). I can’t wait to give this one a shot and will no doubt lament its passing as I have so many others. I still think of you often, Bandwagon Citra…
I can now imagine a day when our area is mentioned in the same breath as Asheville, NC, amongst craft brewers. If our local breweries like Smartmouth keep on the trajectory that they are on I can almost guarantee it.
