I took a whole class on Shakespeare’s works in college. I discovered that Shakespeare is difficult to read, much easier to listen to when someone else is reading it to you and even better watching actors perform it. I discovered that I like Shakespeare.
Even more fun than reading, listening or watching the complete works of William Shakespeare is going to see the “bad boys of abridgement”, the Reduced Shakespeare Company, performing “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) (revised)”.
The Virginia Arts Festival and Zeiders American Dream Theater will present this fast-paced condensation of the Bard’s most famous works May 7 – 12 at Zeiders American Dream Theater in Virginia Beach.
This is Shakespeare for the attention challenged. Reduced Shakespeare Company zooms through 37 of Shakespeare’s play in 97 “maniacal minutes.” The Company has been “revising” Shakespeare since 1981. They have performed their Speedy Gonzales version of Shakespeare’s works around the world, including the White House, Lincoln Center, London’s West End and Montreal’s Just for Laughs Festival.
Zeiders American Dream Theater,
abridged to “The Z”, is a great, new addition to Town Center in Virginia Beach. The Z is an intimate, 300-seat theater. Not a bad seat in the house.
Zeiders American Dream Theater is a nonprofit theater company whose “mission is to provide artistic experiences to the community in a forum that fosters and introduces new, exceptionally gifted artists, composers, and creative writers.” The folks at The Z are dedicated to forming partnerships with artists, arts organizations, and local companies in Hampton Roads. “The Z understands that when the arts as a whole thrive, we all benefit—artists, patrons and the broader community.
They are excited to be hosting Reduced Shakespeare Company in their new theater. This is a great way to stick your toe into the deep waters of William Shakespeare and have some fun.
