It is time again for the Science Pubs event, and this time, it will be held at Tapped Gastropub in Virginia Beach on Thursday, April 20th.
This month’s Science Pubs will focus on Why the Man of Steel Cannot Have His Own Super Condoms: Value Management in the Character Licensing Biz. The presentation will feature Dr. Avi Santo, Associate Professor of Communication and Director of the Institute for the Humanities at Old Dominion University. Trivia begins at 6pm, and the program starts at 6:30pm.
Dr. Santo will discuss the overt effort to align the potential economic value that Superman or Moana (or any of your favorite characters) possess with social and cultural values prevalent in our society at any point in time, including navigating one of our deepest societal contradictions: the desire to simultaneously stand out and fit in among our peers.
He will explore the kinds of cultural work done by consumer product divisions in ensuring that these franchises stories are encoded onto everything from the Transformers toothbrushes to the Transformers lingerie that we can buy. This work helps us understand just how skillfully managed character brands are, but also helps us see the incredible cultural power wielded by licensors, who get to decided what are or are not appropriate product extensions for these brands.
Dr. Santo strongly encourages attendees to show up wearing their favorite branded t-shirt and prepared to be called on to tell everyone why.
As always, the event is free, but they request that you RSVP (head to here). The first twenty-five people to arrive for the event get a free beverage. To find out more about Science Pubs, you can follow them on Facebook here.
