Recently Norfolk joined over 900 cities worldwide with its very own PechaKucha Night.
The Norfolk area’s first PKN night was everything PechaKucha intends a PKN evening to be. Creative people got together for an informal and fun gathering to share their ideas, works, and thoughts in the PechaKucha 20×20 format (20 images, each for 20 seconds).
From marijuana reform (by AltDaily’s very own Jesse Scaccia), to Buddhism, to the wonders of Puerto Rico, to graphic art, to breaking your personal limitations, to the everyday benefits of improv (by Push Comedy theater’s Alba Woolard)…. our PKN presenters shared their concepts and insights in under 7 minutes. The concise PKN format allows for the presentation of a wide variety of topics in one laid back, enjoyable evening.
PechaKucha nights have gone viral globally because most cities have virtually no public spaces where people can show and share their work in a relaxed way. And when there is such an event, presenters tend to talk too much.
Anyone can present — this is the beauty of PechaKucha Nights. The key to a great presentation is to present something you love. Most people use PechaKucha Night to present their latest creative projects or work. Some people share their passion or hobbies, while others share photos of their latest travels or life musings. Good PechaKucha presentations are the ones that uncover the unexpected — unexpected talent, unexpected ideas. Some are incredibly personal, some are incredibly funny, but all are very different, and they turn each PechaKucha Night into an enriching, enjoyable experience for the audience.
The second PechaKucha Norfolk is being held on September 22 at Work/Release, an arts venue, exhibition and events space that features a bar and restaurant located in the historic Texaco building in the NEON District in Downtown Norfolk, Virginia. The event encourages diverse and talented people from a spectrum of social sectors to share their ideas: from artists to entrepreneurs, from philosophers to city planners. Anyone can present and anyone can enjoy.
In the collaborative spirit of PechaKucha, PKN Norfolk brings together several creative entities. As the official promoter, The Muse Writers Center feels PechaKucha will be a welcome addition to Norfolk’s cultural offerings.
PKN Norfolk will be held September 22, 2016 at Work/Release (759 Granby Street, 23510). Happy hour starts at 5:00 P.M. and presentations begin promptly at 7:00. The event is free though donations will be collected to support future PKN events, which will be held quarterly.
