NEWPORT NEWS, VA –Peninsula Fine Arts Center’s (PFAC) latest interactive exhibit, Chagall for Children, encourages each visitor to explore the art of famed artist, Marc Chagall!
PFAC will also introduce Sensory Friendly Fridays, beginning July 20, from 2:00 – 4:00pm, during PFAC’s normal operating hours, children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and sensory processing differences can have a fun, enjoyable and interactive learning experience in a comfortable and accepting environment.
Sensory Friendly Fridays are a great way to explore the 15 interactive stations in the Chagall for Childrenexhibition, during the museum’s quieter Friday afternoons.
Chagall for Children, now open at PFAC through September 30, features reproductions of 15 Chagall masterpieces, all accompanied by hands-on interactive elements that allow children to explore their own creativity.
Each piece of artwork includes an interactive audio recording that gives the visitor information about the piece. After learning some background information about the work, guests can take part in a hands-on activity that supports the art.
These imaginative activities are as varied as Chagall’s works. For example, a fabric rendition of Chagall’s “The Rooster” lets children rearrange the bird’s colorful tail feathers. A bas-relief of “The Birthday” allows visitors to make rubbings of the artwork to take home. “The Poultry Yard” offers various soft-sculpture animal parts that children can mix and match to create their own fantastical animals.
At different stations throughout the exhibit, guests can create mosaics, weave tapestries, use touch screens to digitally alter Chagall’s masterpieces, conduct symphonies, and through the magic of video, they can even insert themselves into one his paintings. After exploring all the artwork, the Museum offers a reading nook stocked with children’s books about Chagall’s life and work.
This unique exhibit was created by Kohl Children’s Museum in 1996. For the past seven years, Chagall for Children has been touring the country with stops at many other notable children’s museums. Cities that hosted the exhibit during its 7-year tour include Las Vegas, Miami, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Manhattan and Atlanta.
