(Virginia Beach, VA) February 11, 2019– The ViBe Creative District nonprofit announced a continued partnership for programming with ViBe Story Exchange for 2019. The partnership pairs selected vis- ual and performing artists with the written word—a true arts & humanities collaboration. Drawing in- spiration from a featured artwork, writers will be asked to write a short story, poem or essay reflecting their interpretation of the art. In return, the featured artist will respond to the written word with a dia- logue about their piece. The writers and artists will be featured in a 6-week ViBe Story Exchange Se- ries beginning in March.
A call for submissions from local artists will take place from February 11-25, inviting artists to share a single drawing, painting, sculpture, video or other visual artwork which can be publicly displayed in a participating venue in the ViBe District later this spring. Simultaneously, a call for writers will take place to find creative individuals who want to accept the challenge to interpret the selected artworks— through spoken word, poetry or song.
ViBe Creative District will host artists and writers at six feature events at ViBe business partners dur- ing a 6-week series on Thursday nights from 6-7pm, March 21-April 25. Each week of the series will feature one artist paired with one writer at a local creative business. A final collaborative performance featuring all six artists and writers is scheduled for First Friday on May 3, 2019 on artist designed, performing arts in ViBe Park at the corner of 18th Street and Cypress Ave.
To submit images of artwork or writing samples, email: firstname.lastname@example.org Upon se- lecting artists and writers, the Story Exchange will share selected artworks with the writers to create a written response to the visual art or video. Artists and writers must commit to attending their feature event and the collaborative final performance.

An Arts and Humanities Collaboration
“We are excited to partner once again with the Story Exchange, which first began here in the District in 2016. In prior year’s the Story Exchange has been based off of a submitted story or written word,” said Kate Pittman, Executive Director of the ViBe Creative District. “This year we’re reversing the roles–the artwork takes the lead.”
“Celebrating its fourth year in existence and in collaboration with the ViBe Creative District, Story Ex- change is energized to bring a new approach to its community art-and-storytelling project in the ViBe
Creative District. It was originally imagined, planned and executed in Virginia Beach’s arts district where artisans, restaurant owners and retail shops came together to promote storytelling, community and the arts. Now, “with the help of the very neighborhood that kickstarted this idea, Story Exchange is ready to grow in new directions by approaching art and storytelling from a new entry point,” said Sheena Jeffers, Founder of Story Exchange. Before, Story Exchange asked artists to respond to writ- ten word. Now, they are asking the authors to respond to art. “We hope this new approach will rein- force the apparent and impactful connection between the stories we live and the art we create. We hope to show that no matter which way you choose to enter this space – whether the story or the art first inspired you – what’s important is the shared community and vulnerability and the collective will- ingness to have conversations nurtured by art and words.”
