A local yogi who has led a surge of pop-up yoga classes in Hampton Roads is going out in style.
Jessica Johnson estimates that she has taught thousands of yogis through Bhav Brigade, a traveling yoga class which she co-founded. She’s moving to the Bay Area to do her residency in Emergency Medicine at Stanford, but not before an epic sunset yoga class on Norfolk’s iconic Battleship Wisconsin.
The class will take place Thursday, May 18th, at 7pm. The class will be family-friendly, accessible to all-levels, and donation based — which means pay what you can.
“The Wisconsin is not only a symbol of Norfolk’s proud Navy heritage, it’s also a community asset,” said Nauticus’ Executive Director, Stephen Kirkland. “Paradoxically, the fantail of the battleship is one of the most peaceful, serene settings in town to watch the sun set over the Elizabeth River. The thought of hundreds of yogis out there sold me immediately.”
Bring a yoga mat if you have one, though one of the event’s sponsors, Lululemon, will also have some mats available as well.
There will be four additional teachers at the Nauticus sunset class offering assists to students. The class is also Bhav Brigade’s two year anniversary.
The rain date is Thursday, May 25.
“Bhav means ‘good energy’ or ‘divine mood’ in Sanskrit,” said Johnson, “and it comes from the Hampton Roads people.”
