For the second consecutive year Hampton Roads Beard & ‘Stache Society is holding a facial hair competition. Proceeds from the competition go to a locally based charity. Last year the competition raised over $3,000 for Wounded Wheels, an organization that researches and develops how to make cars wheelchair accessible for combat wounded veterans.
This year the competition benefits VetsHouse out of Virginia Beach. Vetshouse, Inc. is a unique nonprofit organization serving homeless veterans in Hampton Roads. It is not a shelter, but a 12 month program providing contemporary living quarters in a group environment, assistance in job hunting, transportation, personal skills and development guidance.
Now that you know a little bit about the charities we have chosen to support, I’m sure you are a bit perplexed as to what a “facial hair competition” is. Here are four simple points that layout why you should attend our competition and what exactly it is.
A facial hair competition is as diverse as a “Rabbi, Priest and Minister walk into a bar” joke. Literally, you have people from all different backgrounds that attend facial hair competitions! No one passes judgment and everyone is there for the same purpose, and that is to raise money for charity, have some fun and meet new people. Oh, the facial hair is just as diverse too. If you’re a facial hair lover, this is your utopia.
Red White & Beard
It’s no secret to any of us that Hampton Roads is a military town and that means many people who leave the military often end up retiring here. Many retired military personnel grow facial hair for the first time in YEARS after they leave the service. We decided to create a category for all of the retired military folks to show off their newly acquired or older and well cultivated facial hair. We call this category “Red, White & Beard,” and it’s all about the folks who were a part of our military and have since grown facial hair after completing their service to our country.
Fun for Women
If you’re a woman and a facial hair lover, please join us. If you’re a woman and competing is more your speed, we have two categories for you. The first being Fake Realistic: make a beard or mustache, glue it to your face and the more natural it looks the better. The second is Fake Creative: make a beard out of anything, literally! The more unique, the better.
Once the competition is over at 11pm, we’ll be getting down at the after party. The after party is going to feature two of the best local bands around. First up is the Wet Boys. These guys are performers and put on one of the best local music shows in Hampton Roads, and if you haven’t seen them this is your chance. The second band is Johnny Trash and the Scoundrels. They have a great rockabilly sound and come straight out of Hampton, VA.
This is a BIG Deal
I’m not a boastful person by nature, but this competition is a big deal. We have competitors coming from Alaska, Minnesota, Ohio, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and Maryland. We are grateful that so many people would travel a great distance in order to help us raise money for charity and let us show off how great Hampton Roads is.
If you’d like to attend Whiskers of War ’15 it will be held at Shaka’s Live in Virginia Beach on 11/7/15. If you’d like to achieve hirsute glory we have 12 categories for you to choose from, or you can just take in the festivities. Tickets are only $15 and can be purchased online or at the door the day of the competition. For tickets, click here. For the event on Facebook, click here.
