Friday, March 8 is International Women’s Day, kicking off Women’s History Month. NATO Allied Command Transformation and the Norfolk NATO Festival are partnering to present a “one-of-a-kind” event – “Innovation Thru Inclusion – Better the Balance, Better the World”. It will take place on Friday, March 8 from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM at the Marriot Waterside Hotel in Norfolk.
This is a unique opportunity for students, civilian and military families and organizations to listen to a panel of dynamic women and one man, who are leaders in their fields, to discuss how “innovation can only be truly achieved through diversity and inclusion.”
The line-up of guest speakers is impressive and inspiring. There will be Dr. Christine Darden, the first African American woman to be promoted to Senior Executive Service at NASA’s Langley Research Center and a leading researcher on supersonic flight. She was featured in the best-selling book “Hidden Figures”.
Dr. Stephanie Adams, Dean of the Old Dominion University Engineering Department and Lt. Christine Whitecross, Canadian Military Engineer, nominated as one of Canada’s top 100 most powerful women will also be on the panel.
Rounding out the panel will be Vice Admiral Paul Bennet, Royal Navy Officer and Chief of Staff at NATO Allied Command Transformation. NATO is committed to the “protection and participation of women and the inclusion of gender perspectives in all of its tasks and functions.” Policies, regulations and annual action plans have been put in place at NATO Allied Command each year for the past 15 years, “to improve cultural awareness, gender balance and diversity across the entire organization.”
The City of Norfolk has chosen to honor women in the military in 2019 through cultural activities, from the Virginia International Tattoo themed “Courage and Commitment: A Salute to Women in the Military”, April 24 – 28, to the 66th Annual Norfolk NATO Festival where women will be featured on April 27.
