You know the deal. I list my picks. You go out and bang your heads. It ain’t rocket science. Know what I mean?
And hey! Watch out for each other this weekend.. These are dark days.
SOJA / No BS! Brass Band
The NorVa, Norfolk
Soja is a reggae based musical blender with some thoughtful songwriting and a certain amount of earnestness that I find endearing on the right day. We saw the No BS! Brass Band at last year’s LAVAFest and they kick ass.
Louie Louie / Ladada / Mirrors
Charlie’s American Cafe — Riverview
Ladada made an outsized splash last year and I look forward to continuing to watch the growth of the group. The Mirrors is the Psych Rock side of Ronnie Talman’s particular musical row to hoe.
Who We are Not
Starving Artist Cafe, Norfolk
I hear this will be an acoustic set with just lead singer Pamela Jo Sward and her husband Joe Talley — who is one of the more underrated git fiddlers in the area and always fun to watch.
The Janks / Hot Gumbo Brass Band
Work Release, Norfolk.
The Janks are why I’d hit this. There’s really not another band in the area that sounds like these guys. Kind of a newish take on 30’s Orlean’s flavor jazz. If you’ve not heard them yet, get in on this show.
Music Makers Rock School Show
97.3 Eagles Nest Virginia Beach
2PM. $5 cash only at the door.
Think School of Rock. Four student bands playing a wide range of genres from Sabbath to Radiohead. Check out the up and comer’s.
I’ve got my eye on MAE’s show at the Norva on 5/11. More on that later.
Keep the rubber side down and try not to get deported.
