The weather is beginning to warm up, the flowers are blooming, and the birds are chirping. Winter is done. Another reason for a little spring in your step? All of the fantastic dance happenings heading your way this month.
The Royal Winnipeg Ballet will be kicking off the Virginia Arts Festival’s dance line up this year. Founded in 1939 and granted its royal title in 1953 under the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet is Canada’s oldest ballet company, and North America’s longest continuously operating ballet company. They will be presenting the intense classic Swan Lake, with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra performing the Tchaikovsky score. The performances are at Chrysler Hall on Friday March 31st and Saturday April 1st at 7:30pm, and Sunday April 2nd at 2:30pm.
The Todd Rosenlieb Dance Ensemble and Virginia Ballet Theatre Ensemble will be coming together to present their Spring Concert. This show will be a collection of classical and contemporary dance pieces, held at the Benjack Studio Theater at the TRDance Center. The performances are Friday April 21st and Saturday April 22nd at 8pm.
On Saturday April 22nd, not only will the Urban Bush Women be making their Virginia Arts Festival debut, they will be presenting a world premiere of Hair and Other Stories. Based in Brooklyn, NY and founded in 1984, this dynamic company shares stories with audiences through a combination of contemporary dance and the culture and traditions of the African Diaspora. The show begins at 8pm at the Attucks Theatre.
Another dance performance is taking place on April 22nd at the American Theatre. The Hampton based company, Riddick Dance will be performing Phoenix. This piece is a tale of a boy facing, witnessing, and overcoming the struggles of life and growth. The performance is at 8pm.
The Virginia International Tattoo returns to the Scope Arena this month. The Tattoo includes more than 1,000 performers, from drill teams to military bands to step dancers. This vibrant and engaging show is the largest Tattoo in the United States. The four performances will be held April 27th through 29th at 7:30pm, and April 30th at 2:30pm.
April 29th brings the 6th Annual Dance for a Cause Dance-a-thon at the Mambo Room. From 10am to 10pm, the day will be filled with social dancing, classes, prizes, and more. Teams and individuals can raise funds for their favorite charity by dancing; no dance experience is necessary.
