We’re back! The 2018-2019 award season has come to a close. Next up is the The MTV VMA’s. They’re coming up soon at the end of August. The 2018-2019 AltDaily Theatre Awards is happening around that time too. Look at us hanging out with the MTV VMA’s. Moving on, the next awards season is gearing right up just as this one ends. Spamalot and Mamma Mia begin our 2019-2020 award season. Although Spamalot has already closed it’s (pretty much sold out) run, you still have one weekend left to see Mama Mia. Time is flying by.
BIG NEWS! The AltDaily Theatre Awards will officially be held online going forward with winners actually getting physical wards this year. (Don’t worry, winners from last year, we will be back tracking to do these awards and get your out soon. No worries.) This online award trend is picking up steam. Check out Eventex they’ve been doing it for a while now. Nevertheless, we are excited for this venture and think you guys will be as well.
For those of you still playing catch up and have no idea about the awards, here is the backstory. The AltDaily Theatre Awards, or the ATA’s (which I so affectionately have dubbed them), is back for part deux. Where did these awards come from you ask? Well they came from the awards coordinator, Rico’s brain. I joke, but seriously, this was an idea I was sitting on for about 2 years. Time progressed by and then I was asked to write for AltDaily. After my first article was submitted I said, “Let me take a leap of faith and present my idea to AltDaily and see if we can’t make this happen”. This local area has been dry, as far as awarding it’s local theatrical talent. Being that I am a part of that scene I heard the talks, the cries and the concerns from my fellow actors. I said well I’m going to start it. I met with our former theatre editor, Nicholas Thornburg, and he thought it was an amazing idea. Tons of meetings ensued and now here we are. We have a judging panel that goes out and sees the shows in the local area. Participating theatres and companies include, Generic Theater, Peninsula Community Theatre, Little Theatre of Norfolk, Little Theatre of Virginia Beach, Smithfield Little Theatre, Williamsburg Players, Panglossian Production and CORE Theatre.
Having this in the area is so extremely important to me. It makes our actors, artists, dancers, singers, lighting designers, choreographers, sound designers, set designers, directors, musicians and a host of others feel valued and appreciated. With categories like Best Play, Best Musical, all acting categories (lead & featured), awards for design (sound, lighting, set), and awards for directing/musical directing and choreography we tried to make sure not to leave anyone out.
Speaking of leaving someone out- we would like to put another formal ask out to our local theatres who aren’t providing the judging panel with some discount, incentive or comp. Help us help the judges get out to see your shows with no hassle. Reach out to email@example.com to discuss further and for more information.
Remember, nominee announcement will be coming out on August 25th at noon. The Friday Podcast will be partnering with us again this year to announce nominees- you can find them on Apple or Spotify. They will be LIVE on the AltDaily Theatre Awards YouTube page. Keep your eye out for more information and details coming soon.
