Canadian singer Dallas Michael John Albert Green, also known as City and Colour, will be singing his heart out at the Norva tonight, May 30th, at 8pm. If you haven’t had a chance to experience him live I highly encourage you to.
At 36, he plays the piano and guitar while his intoxicating voice leaves you wanting more. I was introduced to his music a few years back and saw him live at the National in Richmond, where folks swooned to his acoustic ballads and heart wrenching lyrics.
His sound is very melancholy and goes great with whiskey or red wine; it’s great fall and winter music. Whether you’re experiencing an ending or a new beginning in life, there’s something in his music I’m sure you can identify with.
City and Colour has released five albums since 2005. I suggest starting with his earlier stuff and work your way to his most recent. “Comin Home” and “The Girl” are what got him noticed, followed by ‘”Sleeping Sickness” and “Grand Optimist.” There are some other personal favorites of mine, like “Hurry and the Harm” and “Thirst.” I identified with “Sleeping Sickness” after splitting from a 10 year love. The lyrics:
I awoke, only to find my lungs empty
And through the night, so it seems I’m not breathing
And now my dreams, are nothing like they were meant to be
And I’m breaking down, I think I’m breaking down
It spoke volumes to me during my first holidays spent alone. Then there’s “The Grand Optimist,” in which he talks about his father always seeing the glass as half full.
Then there’s my father
He’s always looking on the bright side
Saying things like “Son, life just ain’t that hard”
He is the grand optimist
I am the world’s poor pessimist
You give him burden sometimes and he will escape unscarred
I adopted these lyrics after seeing my single mother raise me and always making the best lemonade out of the lemons life gave us. It’s sad and it’s happy… but it’s meaningful. His songs will take you on a journey. Even though the subject matter might be dark, the best way that I can describe that sound that effortlessly comes out of his mouth is sexy. It’s great music for a road trip or an evening at home with some adult beverages.
Tonight, take a trip to the Norva with your special someone and prepare to sway from side to side while holding each other tight. For more info or tickets, click here.
