Details regarding Creative Crosswalks:

All crosswalk designs must accommodate the two thick lines at the top and bottom of the crosswalk, which run perpendicular to the roadway traffic. Interior stripes may be covered up or utilized as part of the design. See below the provided PDF containing Crosswalk Dimensions. Artist may choose one of the two options and create their design within those dimensions.

All artists are challenged to create a simple, aesthetically pleasing design that can be accomplished with the help of local citizens and residents. The chosen artists will be asked to sketch out the design onto the pavement in advance of the April 1st VIBE Creative District Anniversary event, taking place from 4-7pm on Friday, April 1st.

For the safety of the artists and all participants, 18th Street will be closed to traffic on Friday, April 1 from noon-10pm to allow for set up, artwork execution and clean up.

The public must be permitted to participate in your design. Please submit proof of prior collaborations with your application as requested.

Traffic safety paint will be provided for artists. All designs must match the colors provided: White, Blue, Yellow and Black. Artists may mix these colors if they desire.

Selected artwork submissions will become property of the VIBE Creative District. The image will be used for promotional use by the VIBE Creative District, MOCA and City of Virginia Beach, both with and without credit as permitted.

Artists:

Artists must be Hampton Roads residents and at least 18 years old. Artists of the 2 chosen designs for Creative Crosswalks will receive a $300 stipend for their design and time to executive both the sketch of the crosswalk in advance of the public event on April 1 from 4-7pm and their time collaborating with the public during the event itself. A W9 will be provided and must be completed in order to receive payment. Artists will have all materials provided for them including: tape, paint, brushes, etc. within reasonable expenses by MOCA. Please indicate the types of materials you anticipate needing on the application form. Content for Creative Crosswalks must be appropriate for the general public and cannot include: profanity, nudity, gang symbols, political content, advertisements of any kind, nor anything that may be deemed inappropriate or offensive.

Creative Crosswalk designs must remain within the dimensions provided. NOTE: There are two crosswalks with varying dimensions. You are to select one and design to those specifics.

Rules:

The application will be open to Virginia Beach artists from March 15 to March 22– one week only. Applications close at 8pm on March 22. The winning artists will be announced to the public on Monday, March 28th via websites and social media hosted by: VIBE Creative District, MOCA and The City of Virginia Beach Office of Cultural Affairs. Artists must be available on Friday, April 1 between noon and 4pm to sketch, tape or prep the crosswalk for community participation starting at 4pm. ABSOLUTELY NO WORK MAY BEGIN BEFORE THIS TIME.
