The ViBe Creative District nonprofit announced today that Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Portsmouth Arts Districts have planned a collaboration to celebrate the local arts in Coastal Virginia this Spring.
The weekend of April 20-22 will feature special arts opportunities in all three destinations which can be explored over the course of the long weekend, starting with Friday at the ViBe Creative District in Virginia Beach, travelling to NEON District on Saturday and ending the weekend exploring Portsmouth Cultural Arts District Sunday.
GOALS OF ARTS DISTRICTS PARTNERSHIP:
- Celebrate the diverse and incredibly talented artists of Coastal Virginia
- Raise awareness to arts districts in Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Portsmouth
- Garner significant media attention and press for the local arts
- Attract cultural tourists both locally and out-of-market to explore the arts districts
- Emphasize the drivability between three partner cities’ arts destinations
- Increase attendance to arts programs, local creative businesses and social media accounts for each partner
Visitors are encouraged to visit Virginia Beach’s ViBe Creative District for a custom curated itinerary featuring art “Sights” at Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, the interactive ViBe Mural Tour google map app, and artisans’ workshops in The Alley paired with culinary “Bites” for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Over 30 arts “Sights” and 10 culinary “Bites” options offer travelers unique experiences at all small, locally-owned businesses, providing a true flavor of authentic Virginia Beach!
In Norfolk’s NEON District, spend Saturday diving into a neighborhood on the rise. Visitors should bring walking shoes to stroll past every mural, sculpture and glass piece along the way to exceptional food, drinks and entertainment. Starting the day at world-class Chrysler Museum of Art and ending with a live improv show from local comedy troupe Push, each stop on the comprehensive itinerary will share at least a few of the almost 50 public art pieces in place in NEON, plus provide a true flavor of local coffee, brews and eats.
Spend the day enjoying unique art, culture, and dining experiences – only a ferry ride from the NEON and just minutes from the VIBE. Visitors to Portsmouth’s Cultural Arts District will enjoy a combination of art, culture, history, shopping, dining and entertainment within a walkable environment enhanced by outdoors spaces and a seawall overlooking the Elizabeth River.
One of A-Kind Partnership and Cultural Tour
“This partnership between the three cultural arts districts is the first of its kind in Coastal Virginia, perhaps in the Commonwealth as a whole.” said Kate Pittman, Executive Director of the ViBe Creative District. “We want to share with the public that these artistic destinations are all within an hour drive of one-another and feature very different opportunities to learn about local art over the course of one weekend.”
“It’s been a goal of the NEON District to connect with other arts districts in the region, especially with each one focusing on a different authentic experience, be it the maker and artisan retail scene in ViBe, the classic historic riverfront in Portsmouth, or the large-scale public art in Norfolk’s historic and walkable downtown,” notes Rachel McCall, Special Projects Manager with the Downtown Norfolk Council. “This weekend will truly bring us together and provide visitors with the best of all of our creative worlds.”
“We’re excited about our partnership with the ViBe and Neon Districts.” Said Tanya Street, Chair of the Portsmouth Museum and Fine Arts Commission. “Not only will this collaboration highlight the cooperation between our local arts districts, but it will help to strengthen the cultural identity of our region.”
