We have our first building approved, Zedd’s on Granby Street. Now we need artists to animate the space!
We want to paint as many boarded-up buildings in Hampton Roads as possible.
Why? Because boarded-up buildings are sad, but with a little paint, they instantly become inspiring public art. Like magic.
Our vision is one by one; all the boarded buildings in Hampton Roads will be covered with paint. Imagine these boarded up buildings, transformed into something alive and colorful. Together we can make something unfortunate into works of art.
We have our first building approved, Zedd’s on Granby Street. Now we need artists to animate the space! We are also working with other property owners throughout Hampton Roads. As more buildings get approved, we will need more artists.
Our theme is building the community. So naturally, all artwork will be seen by the community and should be designed accordingly.
A limited selection of paint and supplies will be available. Once approved, studio time and space can be arranged. All you need to do is give your time and your artistic talents. Easy right?
Who is eligible?
Everyone. All artists are welcome. Do you have a vision? We want to see it.
How do I enter?
1. Submit at least 3, no more than 5 jpeg images or your best work that embodies the style and nature of which you plan to work. Label each image with the format of LastName_1, LastName_2, etc.
2. Artist’s Statement
3. Send information to firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject line “Hampton Roads, The Canvas Artist Submission.” The maximum file size is 2 MB. Be sure to include your name and phone number in the email.

All artwork will be seen by the community and should be designed accordingly.
When is the deadline?
All submissions for our first approved building are due by October 15,2010.
Anything submitted after this date will only be considered for future buildings. Once you submit, your work will be reviewed and considered for all future buildings and will not have to be submitted again.
What is the selection process?
All submissions will be juried by a selection panel consisting of professional artists and directors. Selection will be based on artistic merit, and the appropriateness for the project due to limitation of space.
When will the selected artists be announced?
Selections will take place shortly after the October 15, 2010 deadline. Selected artists will be notiﬁed via phone and email.
How do I donate?
Want to help but don’t have the time? Give us your old paint! We need lots of latex acrylic paint. Any painting supplies such as brushes, rollers, tarps, etc would be helpful too. Email Rick Nickel to schedule a drop off arrangement at RNickel@odu.edu.
