Story Exchange brings together local neighbors to share stories of love, loss, and resilience as well as other personal life stories or experiences close to their hearts.
From young children to the communities’ elders, stories of the human experience are submitted, chosen and paired with a local artist to develop a presentation or exhibit of our most treasured, challenging and lovable moments.
The inaugural event is this First Friday, February 2nd, and features a story by author Jaye Rivera, who shares how neighbors helped her overcome a repeated history of sexual violence.
“We had a knock code in place,” Rivera wrote. “If I needed help, I just needed to bang on the wall three times and they would call the cops. The cops were called on several occasions.”
Rivera took control of her life, safety, health and happiness and now strives to live a happy life. Local artist Katie Lysik will interpret Rivera’s story through painting.
“The work I was paired with is a very emotional and often dark story, covering decades of trauma, said painter Kate Lysik. “I wanted to show the character’s contrasting reactions to her community as she navigates these years and grows by painting these very light and dark moments.”
ViBe Creative District and ViBe Story Exchange will host artists and writers at six events at ViBe business partners in Spring 2018 as part of First Fridays and Second Saturdays—district-wide celebrations. A final collaborative performance featuring all six artists and writers is scheduled for First Friday in May 2018 on the new Maser performing arts stage located at the corner of 18th Street and Cypress Avenue.
“These events are a chance for local writers and artists to come together to create, and a chance for the Hampton Roads community to experience an impactful display of real-life stories transformed into art,” said Sheena Jeffers, Founder of Story Exchange. “We have seen Story Exchange impact the lives of the community, spark new friendships and rekindle old ones. There is power is storytelling, and there is power in the arts.”
ViBe Story Exchange with Artist Katie Lysik takes place on February 2nd at Zero’s Subs, which is located at 632 Virginia Beach Blvd.
