Virginia Beach’s Will Overman is a busy artist these days as he pursues another breakthrough, as a solo artist.
Not that he won’t have bands play with him sometimes, but the focus is now on his solo role, with a new recording due out soon and recently completing a tour featuring himself and a partner, rather than The Will Overman Band. In addition, Will, who now lives in Charlottesville, has become a bit of a block party impresario, having done one on the Peninsula and now one coming up in Virginia Beach.
The Will Overman Block Party will run from 12:30 to 8:30 p.m. on August 12 in the happening Vibe Arts District. Will himself will be featured, this time with the full Will Overman Band, including Norfolk’s Nate Sacks.
LAVA Presents is co-hosting the block party with Overman.
“Will and I decided to team up to work on the block party together in a similar style to the Super Doppler Block Party at Bold Mariner,” said Josh Coplon of LAVA Presents. “The venue is just down the street from where his family and friends all live and he grew up, which makes the event very accessible.”
The event will be held in the parking lot behind WRV/Three Ships Coffee, 607 19th St, where the Saturday flea market is hosted. Starr Hill Brewery and Towne Bank are the main sponsors of the event.
“I was raised in Virginia Beach,” Overman said. “My family still lives near the block-party site, and my roots are deep here.”
Six bands from all over Virginia will perform: Dharma Bombs (Richmond), Lord Nelson (Charlottesville), Morgan Wade and The Stepbrothers (Roanoke area), Nate Sacks (Norfolk), Bennett Wales and The Relief (Virginia Beach), and Will Overman Band (Charlottesville by way of Virginia Beach).
Food will be provided by area favorites The Lucky Peach and Sofritos food trucks. Charlottesville’s Starr Hill Brewery will provide the suds.
Nestled in the oceanfront area on and around 18th Street (in a wide arc), The Vibe Creative District is a hub for artists, roasters, restaurants, workouts, wares, museums and more, according to its website.
