There seem to be endless arts and entertainment options in Hampton Roads these days, but the Midsummer Fantasy Festival is the only one featuring a gladiator dueling quad… at least this weekend.
This year’s festival is built around Greco Allusion and Squonk Opera. Core Theatre Ensemble will be bringing to life Deborah Wallace’s Niobe, a Greek myth that tells a tale of hubris and the consequences of pride.
“It’s much like American Gods meets House of Cards with a heap of spectacle,” said Patrick Mullins, director of the festival.
The gladiators will be part of ‘The Midsummer Olympiad’, which will also feature “a strongman high striker, tug of war, disc throwing, and artful archery where participants will dip paintbrush arrows in paint and let them fly to create a giant collaborative ‘splatter mural,'” said Janelle Burchfield, an organizer of the event. “Gods, Goddesses and Gladiators will be manning the games, giving laurel wreaths to the those who prove their strength and agility.”
Midsummer Fantasy Festival, held in Town Point Park, is the most mystical, and one of the most free-spirited, events that occur downtown each summer. It’s a night for glitter, both earthly and bright colors, and feeling eternal.
“Wear your togas, dress like a faerie, whatever makes you feel magical!” said Burchfield.
Midsummer enchantment will also include Alchemy Underground’s “The Trilithon,” representing a mystical doorway to other worlds, card readings, parade floats with whirligigs, a merry Cycle Sonic ruckus provided by Squonk Opera, and an everyone-in dance party finale.
The event takes place this Saturday, July 29, from 7pm to 10pm. It is free, and open to all ages.
