Believe it or not, there’s some legit urban music coming out of Peanutcountry.
Get to know BreezePark, who is headlining The NorVa on Saturday night as part of AltDaily’s local music showcase.
AltDaily: I just have to start by saying GOD DAMN you all are creating some fine music out of Suffolk, VA! You’ve got me grooving in my stool in the coffee shop right now.
Let’s start with the beats. What’s your process for coming up with them?
BreezePark: Thank you so much we really really appreciate that, that really means a whole lot to us! With the beats we normally work with our brother/in house producer Mikey Carey out of Norfolk,VA. We started out working with him in 2013 and our first record was the record we all know as “Thrilla.” Normally in the sessions we come with an idea of what we want the record to sound like, then Mikey will begin to play diff chords until something connects with the four of us. It’s a very quick process because we work fairly fast in sessions.
If we aren’t working with him we would find some free downloads off of Soundcloud that we feel fits us as a group. As of lately we’ve been staying away from that because we like working up close and personal with the producers; those records come off a lot more natural because the vibes in the air for anything to be created. So that pretty much explains how our process goes as far as the production tip.
Everyone reading this right now needs to stop what they’re doing and listen to “gera X VESHZA X PLAY – ALL4U”
This song is hot. Has it been getting love on local or national radio? Have you been happy with the response?
Indeed that is an amazing song. As far as any radio play on that record we haven’t had any yet but that would definitely be something great that could help expand the song’s reach. It’s doing super well on Soundcloud, moving in over 11k plays in its first week of release. That’s like the fastest I’ve ever seen a record from any of us get to 10k that fast. I knew it was a special record so when it was finished before we left for LA I played it for the guys and they went crazy! I’m just glad that the record is getting the recognition and plays that it is. Any radio play or further expanding platforms picking up that record would be a blessing! I am truly happy with the response that this record is getting thus far!
I’ve heard your shows at the NorVA in the past have been lit, with 500 people deep. What do you bring to your stage presence that shows love to all your fans who pay good money to come out?
Its all about the energy and confidence and that’s something that we bring every time. When performing sets over 25 minutes plus you have to make sure that the crowd stays engaged and with that it takes thought. You have to look at it from your own perspective as if you were in the crowd to what you would love to see your favorite artist do. Interaction is something we use a lot in performances whether it’s little dialogue in-between the songs or we just to decide to drop a current super hot record to just get people live. It’s about not having a dull moment, making sure that when those people who paid for that ticket felt the money spent was worth it. We want to leave an impact every time we perform as well as bring in new listeners every event. Stage presence is everything so we just make sure every time it’s our time to go up or have an event we make it memorable. Most importantly we make sure to have FUN and when the crowd see’s you having genuine fun on stage that overall energy will spread and you will win every time.
Let’s talk lyrics for a second. From “Bloody Hell”: “Bite the blood off the apple.” Tell us about this line — were you raised Christian? How did that influence your music, if at all? What else influences your lyrics?
This line was based off of the way I was feeling at the time when I was locked in my room. The mind state I was in at the time was so fed up, tired of people not thinking for themselves and not living there life like they want to. The apple represents the risks and challenges I want people to take, which is a sin to the people who don’t think on their own.”Bite the blood” was metaphorically saying, bite the redness off the apple so I chose bite the blood to give a twist to it since it was so unacceptable to just bite the red apple as if you were biting blood. But BE YOU, DO WHAT U WANT, bite the apple and see what happens.
So as far as what else influences my lyrics I would say my experiences throughout this life I’m currently living is the biggest influence on my lyrics.
There is a solid line-up backing you up at this show. Who are you hyped for, and why?
To be honest we are hyped for them ALL. Like around this music scene we currently have in VA we have listened to almost everything around. But as far as this line up goes we’re super excited for everyone’s set. We have a pretty good relationship with pretty much every artist on the ballot. What excites us about the event is the diversity put on one bill. Not one artist on the bill sounds like the other and that’s VIRGINIA. The diversity is something special around here so with that being said we’re looking forward to everyone’s sets. So much talent in one building can only result in a successful outcome this Saturday night. Shoutout to the iLpackmobb/Huey Supreme/Conscious Kane/Cools Miliyan and everyone else in the 75 currently making waves.
Who else is making good hip hop in Hampton Roads / VA these days? Who should our readers be turned on to?
Tons of people are making great music in general out of Virginia but here’s some of our personal favorites:
Matt Maeson/Rozwell/WestBanks (UNDERGOD)
Opal & Fake Izumi
It’s sooooo many more that we rock with but those are some super fire VA artists that are making great music. Each act we did name is different from the other, which makes those names above promising acts in the future!
What should your fans expect from you guys next?
Expect A LOT. The hiatus we have taken musically has given us a lot of time to cultivate a sound that’s going to be simply UNDENIABLE. A lot has happened in our musical absence but just know when we come out … it’s REAL .. we have tons of new finished material coming very very soon and some will even be premiered for the first time this upcoming Saturday. So with that being said you do NOT want to miss this. We are sounding bigger and better than ever.
The show is at 7pm this Saturday, July 30th. BreezePark performs with Cools Miliyan, Conscious Kane, Huey Supreme, and iLPackMobb. For more info or tickets, click here. For more of the band, here they are on Facebook.
