Hampton Roads Pride celebrates October as National LGBT History Month with a LGBT History Walking Tour led by Dr. Charles Ford, author of LGBT Hampton Roads and Professor of History at Norfolk State University.
The Downtown Norfolk tour will highlight LGBT and Civil Rights history from the colonial era and the early days of the U.S. all the way to contemporary discussions about equality.
“Hampton Roads Pride strives to present educational and community-based programming that educates, informs, and raises awareness about the LGBT community in our region,” said Michael Berlucchi, president, Hampton Roads Pride. “We are excited to partner with noted author and historian, Dr. Charles Ford, to share this unique cultural experience with our community. It is important to know our history so that we understand where we are, how we got there, and where we will go in the future.”
The tour meets at 5:30pm at TowneBank Fountain Park (between Waterside District and Town Point Park) and will end with a reception at Waterside District with complimentary appetizers and a cash bar.
“This tour highlights some of Downtown Norfolk’s notorious nightlife at the advent of gay liberation, but it also includes the places where advocates struggled for and achieved the rights that we enjoy today,” said Dr. Ford.
This event is FREE. ALL are welcome.
