As a former leader of public art in Virginia in the 70’s and 80’s, Portsmouth seemed to be having a revival before the most recent Recession.
With numerous art galleries, two juried art shows, a one of a kind museum with ever-changing and challenging exhibits, and the Tidewater Community College Visual Arts Center, a firm foundation for art was built.
In spite of the economic downturn and “the tolls” hitting our city particularly hard, art is shining through. The Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center is more far-reaching than ever, our art shows continue to draw huge crowds, and our downtown is nearing an official designation as an Arts District.
So far, Support Portsmouth Public Art (SPPA) and the City have produced nine murals throughout Portsmouth and a sculpture at the entrance of the Children’s Museum of Virginia. A second sculpture is in production and a third on the drawing board.
Currently, plans are being discussed for as many as four murals and/or art installations for the Mid City area. Additionally, the public libraries and Oasis Social Ministry will be benefiting from public art.
SPPA funds most of its work through private donations, fundraisers, and matching grants. We have held dinners at private homes and restaurants, art sales, a Miss America Pageant Party, and a Murder Mystery Party. We continue to give our supporters creative and unique ways to enjoy the fun of art while helping us meet our mission of purchasing and installing public art in Portsmouth.
Our next fundraising event is a Derby Party. Place your bet and when you win, you can use those winnings to buy unique and exciting Silent Auction items. (ie. a week in a Rio de Janeiro flat, paintings & jewelry, a “Drinks on the Dock” Party & many more). If you’re not so lucky, you can use real cash to bid on those items.
Make your plans now to Celebrate the 142nd Race for the Roses and Support Portsmouth Public Art ~ where everyone wins.
Our party will be held in the lovely home of Dr. John Joyce at 532 North Street in Olde Towne Portsmouth on May 7th, from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm.
