“We love playing Norfolk and we are really looking forward to coming back,” said Casey Harris when talking about X Ambassadors’ upcoming show in Norfolk at The Norva on November 28th.
“Norfolk is our roots,” he said in an exclusive interview. “We haven’t played there for at least a year and it’s about time we came back, especially after this long. It’s going to feel like coming home, it’s just incredible.”
Some locals might not know that X Ambassadors got their break about five years ago right here in Norfolk and coming back is special for the band.
“It’s sort of crazy how that happened,” Casey said. “It was a series of absolute coincidences. We recorded an album, 96X heard one song, really liked it and put it on the radio. Imagine Dragons was in town playing when Dan Reynolds was in a van and the driver played a live acoustic video on YouTube of the song. Dan Reynolds loved it and told his producer.”
And the rest was history.
With hits like “Renegades” and “Unsteady,” X Ambassadors has quickly become a well-known band. Casey especially loves performing “Unsteady.”
“It’s my favorite to play live because it is so stripped, down especially the intro and we like to let the crowd sing the first verse,” he said. “Feels like the entire venue is singing back at us. I don’t even have words to describe it to give it true justice.”
Casey and his brother, Sam, along with band member Adam Levin, have been in the studio for months writing new songs, some which have come out this year and more they plan to release in an album early next year.
“We had just come off of two years of solid touring,” Casey said. “We had some rough times and eye-opening moments. Coming out of this place of exhaustion allowed us to be very excited when we were writing this album. We wanted to write an album that focused on the positive, and despite all these horrible things going on in the world, it’s still really important to be a grateful person and enjoy life.”
Casey said the most difficult part about the song writing process isn’t writing music but deciding which songs they’ve written will actually make it onto the album.
“Anything and everything that came to mind, we wrote and then decided on what felt right,” he said. “Some songs became more fruitful then others. The hardest part of the process is now, we had settled on a track list at the end of the summer but now we have started writing songs again and we are rethinking the entire track list. We love all these tracks — it’s like pulling teeth picking which make the album.”
Fans aren’t worried though. Casey and the X Ambassadors are genuine artists. Their music is unique and their sound is what sets them apart from other musicians out right now.
