The Space Above in Norfolk is by far my favorite studio! As soon as I walked up the stairs I immediately knew that I had found my yoga home.
We are fortunate to have a great grouping of yoga studios in the area, with some great teachers and I only hope to see this community continue to grow.
Style(s) of yoga taught there
General Hatha Yoga is taught at The Space Above.
Why you love it…
Classes can range from a quite restorative practice in the Slow Groove Friday evenings to the dynamic and athletic Brute Yoga and Wake Up n’ Go Flow. TriYoga, yoga on the wall, prenatal…there is something for every level of practitioner.
I love the focus on alignment and safety in the physical asana practice offered by the teachers.
What is the studio’s origin story?
Lisa & Kim.
The studio was co-created by Lisa Vaughan-Meer and Kim Austin-Peterman when there weren’t many studios in the Norfolk area. They both wanted a place to practice, share their love of teaching and be able to see massage clients. I guess you could say it was time to focus their energy in to one place instead of multiple places all over Hampton Roads.
Ideal first class for a beginner
Yoga 101 is definitely a GREAT place to start. Proper usage of props, introduction to poses, breath practice, philosophies, and languaging to prepare the yogi for any class they desire to take.
Ideal first class for an experienced yogi
As an athlete – a thick muscled, tight athlete – the Brute Yoga class is one of it’s kind. I have yet to find another class that incorporates the mindfulness of yoga, the mobility of physical therapy (with corrective and strengthening exercises) and fun (the music is great and we always laugh in that class).
There is a shower. And as an athlete I definitely enjoy that….and if you grab a morning class before work or an evening class before a dinner date.
Mirrors / No mirrors
No mirrors on the walls in the studio. Even better – there is a yoga wall! I guess that would make The Space Above special too. Using the wall in my physical practice has absolutely encouraged more opening/openness.
The Space Above is located at 202 West 22nd Street in Norfolk. For more info, call 757-622-2474, visit The Space Above, follow them on Facebook here.
