Gehring has been playing with Mae for the past 12 years; however, now he has decided to venture out on his own and do something a little more avant-garde than what he is known for.

In 2010, Mae stopped touring and went on a short hiatus; this gave Gehring the opportunity to start tracking and cultivating his own ideas. Stylistically, he wanted to veer closer to his roots in punk rock and hardcore and dabble in something more aggressive. His main motivation: see if succeeding on his own was a possibility. I think he has spun his ideas into gold.
When moves were made in late 2013 with the start of an Indiegogo campaign, his financial goal was achieved in under a month and by early 2014, Demons was born.
The name Demons, translated from a Fyodor Dostoevsky novel, references what’s on the inside more than what is on the outside. I asked Zach about the band’s lyrical content and he claims to not be a storyteller. He says, “The lyrics are more self-analytical.” The songs tap into parts of ourselves that we may have trouble looking at. Generally, most of us have a quieter side to our personality that may be slightly more sinister; Demons is picking apart that side and doing it with edgy melodies and intricate lyrics.
The band has Gehring at the helm on guitar and hooking us with hypnotizing vocals; Drew Orton on drums; Christopher Matthews on guitar; and Jon Anderson on bass. Demons is taking things one day at a time and Zach is hoping to have the first vinyl press released later this month.
Their album, Great Dismal, was made available for digital download on June 16th and is mesmerizing. I’ve found myself listening on repeat for hours and still picking apart the lyrics, while losing myself in the songs.
Demons will be playing a free show on August, 28th at Back Bay Brewing Co. in Norfolk, starting at 8pm. They will be at Work/Release, in Norfolk, with Wyteshayds on September 19th. You can order a vinyl copy of Great Dismal or purchase a digital copy here, the vinyls are a limited edition so you will have to hurry. Also, you can follow them on Facebook and Instagram as DEMONSBAND.
