As much as I love all things pasta, when the warmer weather approaches my taste buds begin to crave fresher foods.
Luckily, the sun is shining bright over Norfolk and new, greener eateries are sprouting up. Each dining experience reminds us all of the importance of fresh, local and quality ingredients — you know, the real secret behind delicious meals and potentially living forever. For everyone who is ready to trade in that big bowl of bucatini for something a little lighter, check out this guide to greener eating for some of my NFK faves.
New to Ghent is Town Center Cold Pressed. Not only is the name a mouth-full, but so is their food! Their menu is full of fresh, vibrant meals such as smoothie bowls, warm bowls and salads. My personal favorite is the Green Goddess Bowl, which is a blend of avocado, banana, spinach, mango and almond milk topped off with tasty granola, coconut and kiwi.
Another highly recommended treat is their Superfood Lattes. These unique lattes range from Matcha to Sweet Potato, but my go-to latte is the Pistachio. This latte is creamy, nutty and even better with a shot of espresso! And don’t forget to slurp on one of their tasty cold-pressed juices or blended smuices (a love child between a juice and a smoothie).
Town Center Cold Pressed is located at 1902 Colley Avenue.
This suppper healthy spot is 100% plant based and organic, but don’t let that scare you — everything on their menu is 100% delicious. Each ingredient on Fruitive’s menu has been carefully selected for optimum nutrition, which makes sense since they are Virginia’s first certified Green Restaurant. Fruitive’s newest location is tucked inside The Main, and the natural light that beams into the building makes you feel healthier as you sip on one of their mouthwatering cold-pressed juices. For those who like their greens on a plate, try one of fresh made salads or collard tacos!
Fruitive is located at 100 East Main Street.
If you are looking for the biggest, most satisfying salad of your life, then you must do the unthinkable: walk five steps past The Grilled Cheese Bistro and open the door to their sister restaurant, The Green House Kitchen. It only takes one three-letter word to describe this green eatery: B-I-G. Each of their farm-to-table salads are served up in big wooden bowls and are packed with big flavor! A must try is the Ranchero Salad. Just imagine a big bowl of local greens, roasted potatoes, freshly-shaved Parmesan cheese topped off with chimichurri flank steak and horseradish dressing… just let that sink in. Next time you find yourself downtown, grab a seat and order something tasty.
The Green House Kitchen is located at 345 Granby Street.
Salads and smoothies are great, but when that taco craving sets in do yourself a favor and head over to California Burrito. You can take solace in knowing that their menu consists of local vegetables, organic beans and rice, and free range meats. They also don’t believe in microwaves or preservatives, both BIG bonuses! Go ahead, treat yourself to some tacos!
California Burrito is located at 319 Granby Street.
Opening in Norfolk this May is Commune. Like many others, I can barely contain my excitement. If you have never experienced Commune, you might be wondering what all the craze is about? Honestly, it’s just so delicious, plain and simple. Every ingredient on their menu is seasonal and locally-sourced, and a lot of it comes from their very own garden. Each meal is created with care so when you bite into one of their savory dishes you will definitely taste the love. Take a seat at one of their beautiful tables and introduce yourself to the fresh taste of coastal Virginia. May cannot come soon enough!
Commune will be located at 745 Granby Street.
