We have a saying. “If you’re bored in Norfolk, it’s your own fault.”
These dates have paid off. At the age of 12, Jack knows how to behave and order in a restaurant. He knows that holding the chair and the door for a lady may not be required, but it sure makes her feel special. He knows how to calculate a tip. Jack is so confident that he’s been known to take himself out for sushi and a movie. Now he, too, is a fan of local businesses.
With his three-year-old sister, Lydia, in our lives, we make a concerted effort to continue what used to generally be spontaneous dates. To help us plan Date Night, we like to turn to Recycling Perks–the generous sponsor of this post. Recycling Perks rewards Norfolk, Chesapeake, and Suffolk residents for recycling with points that can be exchanged for a deal, a “perk” if you will, at a local business. When scrolling through the offerings, I am almost giddy as the plan comes together while I “shop.”
Let’s see what’s on the agenda for our next date:
12:00 Cogan’s North
We’ve been to the Ghent site many times, but Jack hasn’t yet been to the NoCo location and is dying to sit on that amazing upper deck to eat a slice. Which is what you’ll get from the deal at Recycling Perks – a free slice of that marvelous pizza for 50 points. Jack and I will enjoy the breezy view while shooting the breeze. A delicious deal!
1:00 Local Heroes
If you haven’t been, you must, must, must go to this wonderful little gem of a shop. The enthusiastic and cheerful staff will readily help both Jack AND Mommy find just the right comic book to while away some free time. I have one on cats (seriously) and it’s awesome. And for just 25 points, you’ll get your very own comic book! (I remember when comic books cost $0.25!)
1:30 Color Me Mine
When Jack was two we went to the Colley Avenue location to paint a cookie plate in advance of Santa’s arrival. This time we’ll be painting mugs in advance of cocoa-season (our fav beverage!). Normally there’s a studio fee for each person painting, but with the Recycling Perks deal, 50 points gets you a BOGO (buy one, get one). That Saturday morning cocoa will taste even sweeter.
Jack and I have a rule when we go (which is kind of a lot). No ordering the same thing as last time: you must try something new. With the seasonal and creative flavors rolled out so frequently (Caramel Macchiato, anyone?) it’s a pretty easy rule to follow. Plus, you can combine two flavors in one cup! With a BOGO for 50 points, that’s four fabulous flavors!
So in the space of three hours, Jack and I get to eat, shop, and express our creative side, all at locally owned businesses (we’re huge fans!), saving a little cash for our next Date Night.
Chances are good that in six months Jack won’t remember what he got for his 12th birthday. And all too soon it will be challenging to stay connected with a busy teen, not to mention a college student and young adult. The best part of these dates is that we are together in the moment, making memories through shared experiences to carry us through both our lives. We will always have Date Night.
Recycling Perks is available in the Cities of Chesapeake, Suffolk and Norfolk. It’s already part of the recycling program, built as a way to reward the efforts of individual citizens choosing to recycle and beautify their community. Recycling Perks incentivizes saving the world with discounts and freebies from local businesses. It only takes 60 seconds to activate your account online at www.recyclingperks.com. What are you waiting for?
