Norfolk born and raised, Seven A.K.A. has grown to become one of the 757’s most hardcore rappers and is a fixture in the Hampton Roads Hip Hop scene.
The founding member of a performance artists group collectively known as the Wolfpack, he’s currently working on upcoming projects while he hosts an online podcast at Radio Free Radio — regularly discussing local music and often veering wildly into frank discussions of NSFW topics.
You can check it out here. Seriously though.. Not safe for work. And there’s probably all sorts of trigger warnings that apply. Danger Will Robinson!!! You’ve been warned. It’s not my fault if you lose your job for playing this without headphones!
AltDaily: What’s your favorite quote?
Seven A.K.A.: “Love me or leave me alone.” … Jay-Z.
What’s your writing process look like?
For music? Sporadic. (laughs) I have a collection of my random thoughts that I write down and let them turn into what they will.. Whenever they decide to. Does that make sense? I use whatever is close. Usually my phone. My best ideas come early in the morning or when I’m alone. I try to make music that understands the street life without glorifying it.
If you could work with anyone.. Who would it be and and why?
I can’t lie… I kinda wanna work with everybody that’s serious and driven. I can learn from anyone and you never know whose energy you’ll bond with to create something legendary. I’m really open.
Rap or Hiphop? And what’s the difference?
Hip hop is a culture. Rap is a genre of music. I wouldn’t take one without the other.
What do you want on your tombstone?
“I can’t die.”
The Weekend in Music
Sea Level Music Festival: It runs in the family
O’Connor’s Brewery. Norfolk. 5PM
The first evening of this fest showcases the reigning musical folk families of Tidewater. Tidewater, is of course, the old-timey name for our region. I try to catch Bob and Skye Zentz any time I hear they’re playing together. This will be a treat.
LAVA Presents: Son Step / Berries / Seamonster
Toast. Norfolk. 8PM
An interesting collection of some breezy, synthy pop bands that defy categorization. Josh Coplon continues to fuse bits and pieces of fascinating sounds for the intriguing shows in this concert series.
Feature Fridays: Comedians – Brandon Adams & Keith Marcell / emcee Quamin Blckrican / Poets – Juice James and ChaVonne Whisonant
The Venue on 35th. Norfolk. 8PM
This is my artistic mothership. This month’s lineup sounds light on music, but maybe you’re a cultured type who appreciates the value of Spoken Word. Hosted by one of the area’s finer poets — Jorge Mendez.
Destroying Angel / Unmaker / Manzara / True Body
Charlie’s American Cafe. Norfolk. 9PM
Any chance to catch True Body is a chance worth taking. And RVA’s Unmaker channels my favorite era of the Cure — That’s right. I mentioned the Cure again. What are you going to do about it?? Huh?? Yeah. That’s what I thought. Ahem. Anyways. I’m looking forward to this show.
John 5 & The Creatures / Fallout of Fear
Shakas Live. Virginia Beach.
J5 and the Creatures is maybe a tad Proggy for my tastes, but Fallout of Fear rocks. I mean.. They opened for GWAR for fuck’s sake. Go mosh. Have fun. I’m too old for that sort of thing, but you enjoy yourselves.
Now it’s time to say goodbye.
To all our family.
Em Eye See.
Kay Eee Why..
You get the idea, I’m sure.
