Call to Artists: Mural on Bob’s Gun Shop
Where: South-facing wall, 746 Granby St., roughly 100×40 feet
What: The Norfolk Arts District (non-profit status pending) seeks an exciting, all-ages-friendly mural for the Bob’s wall. This wall is seen by thousands in their cars every day and can be seen blocks down Granby St. in Downtown Norfolk. We hope this work plants the flag for the District, proclaiming it a place where serious–and seriously fun–public art happens.
Budget: $10,000. This includes everything—artist time, travel, materials, lift, etc.
Selection committee: Chelsy Carter, neighborhood resident; Charlotte Potter, Chrysler Glass Studio; Amy Brandt, Chrysler Museum Contemporary Collection; Charles Burnell and Careyann Weinberg, Alchemy Norfolk; Hannah Serrano and Jesse Scaccia, AltDaily; Diana Caramat, Governor’s School for the Arts; Jason Levesque, aka stuntkid.
To submit: Email the following to email@example.com
3-5 examples or your large scale work
An artist statement talking about what excites you about this opportunity
A description of your idea for this particular mural and/or sketches
Outline of your budget
Any supporting material you wish to include.
Process: The process for choosing the artist will be based on the number and quality of the applicants who submit and is at the discretion of the committee. An artist may be easily agreed upon and chosen or a finalist phase may be necessary, during which artists would be compensated for any additional requests.
The committee may reach out to potential artists with notes and clarification as needed. Once an artist is selected by the committee, the approved design will be sent to the building owner / sponsor for approval, at which point there is a slight chance more notes will need to be addressed.
Submission deadline: December 23rd, 2013, at midnight.***
Artist will be notified of selection or an update on the process by Friday, January 10th, 2014
Mural is to be completed on or before Monday, March 10th, 2014
***Though if we’re not crazy about any of the submissions we reserve the right to push it.
