In the interest of democracy in Norfolk in advance of the May 3rd local elections, AltDaily would like to run op-eds and letters of support which illuminate the visions and character of the candidates.
There are three races: mayor, two superward city council seats, and two school board seats. If you would like to learn more about the candidates, this is a good starting point.
If you are a candidate in one of these races, we would like to run one op-ed by you that more specifically addresses one of your visions for how to make Norfolk better.
Think policy paper more than stump speech. What best practice are you drawing from? What are your metrics of success? How is your vision a more efficient use of tax payer dollars? How will your policy translate to higher quality of life for citizens?
We would also like to run one letter of support for each candidate, written by a voting Norfolk citizen.
Help us get beyond the talking points and staged photographs. Tell us about their heart. Tell us about their leadership. Tell us about their ability to see past their own egos and allegiances to find the greatest good.
Length should be between 500 and 1,200 words. Submissions should be sent to our editor: firstname.lastname@example.org.
This local election is of monumental importance to our city. The City of Norfolk impacts every moment of your life. Decisions that are made today will be felt for generations to come. That is why we started the NFK Voter Turnout Project. We encourage you to get registered, get educated, and vote. You can pledge to vote here; according to the social science, doing so makes you more likely to actually vote.
