Do you want to create art in the NEON District? The public art committee of the NEON District is hosting a new round of public art projects to be completed in time for this year’s NEON Festival, on October 19 & 20, 2017.
Each year, the public art committee focuses on a strategic corner of the neighborhood, be it entrances to the neighborhood, the perimeter of NEON or a forgotten street. With a large-scale metal sculpture on the horizon for the corner of Olney Road and Wilson Avenue, NEON is focusing on enlivening the stretch of West Wilson adjacent to the Hurrah Players’ new Copeland Center. Two projects on that street are included in this call for artists, and an upcoming yarn bombing will complement both. Additionally, great supporter of the NEON, Robert Marcus of Bob’s Gun Shop, is lending his billboard to the NEON as a rotating mural location every two years.
There are THREE (3) opportunities open for artist submissions:
- Renova Center Parking Lot Wall
- Wilson Avenue Shed
- Bob’s Gun Shop Billboard Mural
- Open call goes live on Tuesday, May 23, 2017
- Submission deadline is Tuesday, June 20, 2017
- Artist selections will be announced in July 2017
- All projects must be completed by October 1, 2017
Non-refundable fee of $20.00. One $20 fee covers submissions for all three (3) open calls. You do not have to apply for all three (3) projects, however there is no reduction in the application fee if you only apply for 1 or 2 projects.
Artists must provide the following in the application:
- Basic contact information
- Brief description of the scope of work
- 4 images of drawings or renderings of work proposed
- Project budget
Please note that if you submit an application as a team, there will be ONE stipend and a lead artist must be identified. If selected for a project, you will be required to provide the Downtown Norfolk Council a W9 tax identification form and an artist grant application before you begin any work.
