“Birding is the fastest growing hobby in the world,” Kellem tells us. “This is one of the best places to do it.” But it’s not birds we’re searching for this morning, it’s oysters, which reveal themselves in the stark world exposed by the retreating tide. “Back when when I was with the Virginia State Marine Police this is what we’d do for lunch,” he said, pulling the boat scratching against an oyster rock as the blue uncovered itself from behind the clouds.
Both Charlotte and I fell asleep on the ride back to Shore, the nature therapy sending a clear message to our bodies that it’s okay to slow down and let the Eastern Shore salt air take over our lungs.
