This Saturday, the Norfolk Tree Commission, in partnership with the City of Norfolk and the Norfolk Master Gardeners, will be giving away 800 trees for free at their yearly Arbor Day celebration.
The event takes place this Saturday, October 7, 10:00am-2:00pm at Lafayette Park in Norfolk (3500 Granby St, 23504).
The tree species that are available for free include Buckeye, Yoshino Cherry, Japanese Maple, Paw Paw, Japanese Snowballs, Dogwood, and Eastern Redbud.
If you’re not sure where to plant your trees or how o take care of them it’s a great opportunity to ask the Master Gardeners about tree planting and care instructions. There will be music, games, vendors, a food truck, and lots of plants for sale.
Giving away trees is an effort to help Increase our city’s tree canopy, which is an important role in helping to ease soil erosion, mitigate flooding, provide wind breaks, and to help cool down the city in the heat of summer. The city’s free tree giveaways are popular so those interested should plan on coming out early.
