Walking around Granby Street downtown has long been one of my favorite strolls in Hampton Roads. I come from a relatively small town and I still find myself in awe of tall buildings; I walk around wide-eyed and face to the sky like it’s my first trip to New York City.
There are plenty of places where I like to pretend to be fancy and grab a bite to eat, but my issue with downtown has long been that it’s more about the cocktails than the beers. The Barrel Room has certainly helped, but my previous go-to spot was always Jack Quinn’s and I was sad to see it close. The beer selection there wasn’t great, but the atmosphere was. It just felt like a place where you were supposed to drink a beer.
I’ve been looking at the signs on the former Jack Quinn’s for what seems like an eternity. Brick Anchor Brew House, with architect renderings above. That pretty much told me everything I needed to hear, consolation that the corner spot that I loved wasn’t going to just be another place my wife dragged me to for Cosmopolitans.
I find myself getting more excited as the late summer opening gets closer, with the promise of 55 craft beer options (almost half of which will be from Virginia breweries), and a menu that will be paired with the beers on hand. There are also plans to offer live music and other events, completing my perfect picture of being a small town kid in the big city.
Information about menu specifics, hours, or even a set opening date are scarce at this point, but I’m already sold. To me, places like this are as much about atmosphere as they are anything else and I will be drinking up both the beers and the atmosphere with equal delight. Great food would certainly be a bonus, but even if they just threw a bowl of stale popcorn on the table and kept my pint glass full they probably couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. I hope to see you there. I’ll be the slack-jawed yokel sitting by the window.
Brick Anchor will be located at 240 Granby St. To follow along, here is their Facebook page.
