What painters have inspired you?
I’m not sure I can narrow this answer down to just painters, but I’ll try. Hung Liu is a Chinese American artist who focuses on cross cultural perspectives and the treatment of women. She is a fabulous painter who has mastered a way of making her paintings look very delicate, graceful, and feminine, but also incredibly strong. I like Gustav Klimt’s use of decorative elements, especially during his gold period. Brilliant Colors! I enjoy Jenny Saville’s work. Her art is so big and fleshy – I just want to go up and grab it; I expect you would feel skin and not paint. I look to Philip Pearlstein for his use of composition. He has a way of cropping his images that makes everything looks so real and surreal at the same time. And let’s not forget Alice Neel, Frida Kahlo, Nan Goldin, Cindy Sherman, Lucian Freud, and Judy Chicago. I’m sure I’m leaving many wonderful names out.
