5 Ways TCC Makes it Easy for Women to Return to College

May 28, 2015 By Gretchen Edwards-Bodmer

For decades, Tidewater Community College has worked to make higher education accessible to more women, allowing them to achieve their personal and career goals. Here are five ways that TCC helps women start college or finish a degree or certificate.

1. Child care

012915cheschildcare1The No. 1 barrier to women getting their education is child care, according to the American Association of University Women. TCC has licensed child development centers on all four of its campuses, thanks to its partnership with the YWCA of South Hampton Roads. Full- and part-time care, as well as after-school care, is available to ages 2 ½ to 12. The fees are on a sliding scale based on income. See TCC.edu/childcare for more info on available programs.

2. TCC in your back yard and in your living room

Did you know that TCC has campuses in four cities right here in South Hampton Roads? That’s right! You can go to TCC in Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake or Virginia Beach! If you can’t get to one of our beautiful campuses, you can take classes online.

Meet Katrina Crowe, a 2014 graduate and mother of two who completed her degree almost entirely online.

3. Open enrollment and affordability

Applying to TCC is easy and it’s free. “Open enrollment” means that you don’t go through a selection process to be admitted like you do at four-year colleges. Thanks to our affordable tuition, financial aid, scholarships and the post 9/11 GI Bill, three out of five TCC students graduate debt-free. See TCCEnroll.com for more info.

4. The Women’s Center

TCC’s Women’s Centers offer comprehensive specialized services to educate, empower, enhance and engage women so they can define, pursue, and achieve their academic, professional, and personal goals. Some of our programming topics include leadership, non-traditional careers, and sexual assault, domestic/dating violence and stalking awareness and prevention education. This is our lovely staff:

5. Annual Returning Women’s Luncheons

The Women’s Center offers an annual luncheon for returning women. If you didn’t pursue or finish college because you took time to raise a family, care for a loved one, work or join the military, join us at one of our upcoming luncheons to learn how TCC can help you get into the pipeline for an in-demand career or four-year degree.

The luncheons are free. Get your ticket here.
